New York’s Best Rock

What is New York’s Best Rock? Depends on who you ask. In the early to mid 70s, the AM band was the dominating force in radio with tightly programmed music, these stations played the same hit songs all day. Many songs repeated as frequently as every 45 minutes!

In the NY Metro Area, there was a few stations that expanded their music to appeal to listeners who wanted more. One of them was 95.5FM WPLJ “New York’s Best Rock”. They were playing popular album cuts as well. And helped create the format called “Album-Oriented-Rock (AOR)

In 1983, New York’s Best Rock was no more as WPLJ switched to Top 40 during the height of their success. Matt never forgot those heady days, so all these years later, he’s taken his obsession for it and turned it into his own weekly radio program. It’s not the original station, instead, it’s Matt’s vision of what New York’s Best Rock could have been if it lived on.
